WVU Tartan

January 5, 2012

Maria Belcher, a WVU student in my wife’s program in the Davis College, designed a tartan for the university. This story ran in WVU Today earlier. A tartan is an interesting visual example depicting a group of people – so a tartan is a cultural image somewhat like a logo or iconic image recognizable and contains emotional history.

Below is a scarf and a blanket we have in our house, one of the first products. Other universities have tartan designs, too. For a student to have this product to her credit is quite an accomplishment.

It is beautiful and also unique. I am a fan of tartan but never seen one with base yellow color.

I had not been aware of this until I stopped by the ITRC and I was invited into someone’s office who had it proudly displayed like a runner on a meeting table. She told me the story about it, and it was exciting to hear that this was born here. It is even cooler to learn of your family association with it after reading this. My initial comment was “If Burberry had designed the perfect fashion accessory for WVU, this would be it.
